A Short History[]

Sonic The Hedgehog was an action/adventure and platformer released for the Sega Genesis in 1991.

Sonic 1

The title screen.

It's the first game in the entire Sonic franchise. The game was created by Sega to rival that of Mario, and succeeding in that task. The game sold millions of copies worldwide, and most reviewers give it 9-10/10. The game has been remade on the GBA with a spindash, and has had many other remakes too, even by Nintendo themselves.

The Gameplay[]

The gameplay was as the characters main trait suggests: fast. You gain points by jumping on/into enemies, keeping ring at the end of the act, a time bonus or other means. Sonic gains momentum the more you hold the directional button in, and his feet will start to spin around like a tank's treads. If you're running and then press down, Sonic will start to do a spinroll, which will also kill all enemies. At the end of each zone Sonic passes, he'll fight his nemesis Dr. Robotnik in one of his machines, then free an animal cage after defeating him. There's also Special Stages, accessed by ending an ordinary stage with 50 rings and jumping into the Ring Portal. There, you must guide Sonic through a falling maze and get to the Chaos Emerald.

Plot[]

The evil Dr. Robotnik has taken over Mobius, a world in a parallel universe, with his army of animal-filled robots. It's up to Sonic, a blue speedy hedgehog, to free the animals and defeat Dr. Robotnik once and for all! He must travel through seven different zones and find the seven Chaos Emeralds to stop him. Once he collects all emeralds, he defeats Robotnik and sets the animals free. The Chaos Emeralds scatter, and Sonic goes back to protecting the animals from further harm.
